Charisma Carpenter was born on July 23 1970 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. She is either Cancer or Leo (she was born so much on the cusp between the two signs that it depends on her hour of birth) with her moon in Pisces or Aries (again, depending on her time of birth). Her name "Charisma" comes from an Avon perfume that her grandmother had given her mother. She used to hate it and would go by the name of "Chrissy" until she was 13. She grew up in Las Vegas until the age of 15, when her father took a job in Rosarito, Mexico. They moved again later to Bonita, a suburb of San Diego. Her parents are now divorced and live respectively in Chicago and Florida. She has two older brothers. She has brown hair and eyes, and measures 5'7 1/2" (171cm). She currently lives in Los Angeles with her golden retriever, Sydney and her boyfriend, Damian Hardy, to whom she may be engaged. She has put many indian charms in her house to repel evil spirits - she says that all the ghosts and demons in "Buffy" and "Angel" must have got to her!
Charisma Carpenter was a pretty average young girl, and certainly isn't snooty and agressive like Cordelia. She studied classical ballet as from age 5, and entered many beauty contests when she was young. Although she changed High Schools three times, she was always moderately popular, being a cheeleader in all the schools where she was. She also had her share of adolescent mishaps, such as bad grades and sneaking out of the house behind her parents' back. She graduated from Chula Vista School of Creative and Performing Arts in 1988, with an emphasis on classical dance. After graduating, she went to travel Europe, and on her return, she moved to San Diego and started to work in order to pay for her studies. She had to do various jobs, including waitress, video store clerk, aerobics instructor and a San Diego Chargers cheerleader. In 1992 she ended up moving to Los Angeles with her boyfriend of the time, and tried entered the UCLA, with the goal to become an English teacher. Her career plans changed when she was introduces to a commercial agent while she was working as a waitress. She started to receive roles in numerous commercials, including one for Secret aniperspirant, and she started taking acting classes in the Playhouse West, an acting school. She also acted in some theatre productions, such as "No, No, Nanette" and "Welcome Home, Soldier. She finally got a break in television, when she guest starred in an episode of "Baywatch". Aaron Spelling noticed her and cast her in the NBC series "Malibu Shores", which was unfortunately short-lived, as the character of Ashley Green. Despite the lack of success of the series, Charisma's character received good critics from TV Guide who thought that her character was the most interesting of the show. It was while she was working for "Malibu Shores" that Charisma went to audition for the role of Buffy in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", but they also made her read the part of Cordelia, for which she wasn't prepared. She received the role of Cordelia, apparently after Bianca Lawson, who guest-starred as Kendra in later episodes, turned the role down. Charisma wasn't really sure about playing a bitchy character like Cordelia, because the character of Ashley had already been the bitchy type, and she was worried that she would only receive that type of roles afterwards. Initially, the character of Cordelia was meant to be temporary, as an irritating superficial character who would cause Buffy trouble. But her character became popular and interesting enough for her to become a cast regular in Season 2 and 3, and her popularity grew so much that she obtained an even more important role in the spin-off series "Angel".
In real life, Charisma stresses a lot that, unlike Cordelia, she is a nice girl! She does have something in common with Cordy, though, she always tried to obtain what she wants, although she doesn't do it in suhc an aggressive manner! She is also the pensive type, which sometimes made people think that she was aloof. It is obvious though that she has a generous heart, and that she's a romantic person. Actually, she is dreaming of starring in a romantic movie, and her favourite movie is "Legends of the Fall" with Brad Pitt. She also says that she wants to choose any new role carefully, to avoid an over-stressed life and to be 100% committed to the movie or series she is working on, because she wants to excel at whatever she does. She also says that she wouldn't mind a "married with children" status and a quiet, comfortable life.
When she has some free time, Charisma does all kinds of activities outdoors: rollerblading, hiking, running, hoseback riding and rock climbing. She says that she undertook that last activity as a way to focus, to know that if she can do that, she can do anything else. She also did sky diving once, but she and all the cast of "Buffy" and "Angel" were asked to sign a contract to not undertake any life-threatening activity while they were under contract with WB. She also continues to dance, and likes to cook, to write poetry and to spend time with her dog.
